Dr. Lawrence Tom is a proud San Francisco native. After graduating from Lowell High School, he received his BS in Microbiology and Immunology from UC Berkeley in 1984 and his Doctorate of Optometry in 1988 from the New England College of Optometry in Boston. His clinical training included pediatrics and multidisciplinary primary care.
Captain Lawrence Tom served in the US Army attending to active duty and retired servicemen and women as Chief of Optometry at Letterman Army Medical Center on the SF Presidio military base.
As adjunct faculty at UC Berkeley School of Optometry, Dr. Tom supervised and mentored optometry students. He still found time to be twice medaled for volleyball at two Gay Games.

David Tom – Operations Manager/UE Partner
Yes, they are brothers! David Tom (the taller one) is the wizard/operations manager and Business Parter at Urban Eyes. Calm, attentive, and experienced, he is also a licensed optician. He’s never too tired though for a pick-up game of basketball.
After graduating from St. Ignatius High School in SF, David received a BS in Nutrition from UC Berkeley and an MBA from the University of San Francisco.
David and his wife, Lilian, are exemplary parents to active twin boys. The four are diehard Giant’s fans, weekend fishermen, and passionate foodies in the Bay Area dining scene.
The Staff
Lawrence and David Tom are particular to hire creative, thoughtful, and helpful people. Many of the staff over the years were or are pursuing nursing, psychology, nutrition, optometry, or other degrees. Later, they recount how impactful their work experience at UE has been in their career pursuits. They are a compassionate and intelligent bunch!
Currently, Alyssa, Emily, and Tiffany work with pride at Urban Eyes and do their utmost for patient’s healthcare and service.
Alyssa is an AP High School student, Emily is studying design arts and her partner Kait is a local top chef. Tiffany has returned to us after a four-year absence to train and study for Optometry School, and her partner, Michael, is a surgical Nurse Practitioner.

Mother to Lawrence and David, you can say hello to her as she keeps an eye on all of us and doesn’t hesitate to hold everyone to a standard. This is truly a long-time SF family business.
